Force Your Android 2.3 [Gingerbread] To Check for Updates

Droid eating an appleWith Android 4.0 (Ice cream sandwich) coming out right away, a lot of people are wondering what is the quickest way to get the update without any complicated configuration. Usually your Android will check for updates every couple of hours and if your phone is rooted - you can adjust this to every hour as an example. I just think that is pretty overkill just to get this update ASAP. If you want to force your phone to go and check just do the following!

Just follow these steps and you should be good to go. I only tested it on the most recent version of Android - let me know about compatibility in comments!

  1. Open up your dialer application (the phone icon)
  2. Enter the following code *#*#2432546#*#*
  3. After you have entered the last asterisk, the phone should remove the code from the dialer and begin doing its thing
  4. After its done, in your notification area you should see an exclamation mark and a "checkin succeeded"
  5. You are done. Thats it!

Phone app is also a code entering mechanism

Checkin successful

The cool thing about this is that it also checks for updates from the marketplace. Great tool for manually scanning for updates. This was done on a Galaxy SII (GT-I9100M). Preview pic by phragmentation (high resolution version here).
